The Common Causes of Plumbing Emergencies

flooded-home

The words plumbing emergency aren’t ones any homeowner wants to hear. They usually conjure up images of water flooding throughout a house, causing furniture to float on currents like flotsam after a ship has accidentally run aground. Most emergency plumbing issues you’ll run into won’t be so drastic, but they’ll still feel urgent.

You have a great ally for your emergency plumbing needs: Reliance Plumbing Sewer & Drainage. We have 24/7 emergency service available. We know how serious major plumbing mishaps can be and how much our customers need us as soon as possible!

We’re going to take a look at the most common causes that will cause you to call us for fast plumbing repair, any time of the day or night.

Blocked drains

Often, a clogged drain is an annoyance that you can clear out on your own using a plunger. (Don’t use store-bought drain cleaners, however, as they can corrode your pipes.) But a buildup of hair, grease, fats, oils, or a foreign object can create a clog you can’t get rid off. You’ll need emergency plumbing help to get that drain working again.

Leaking pipes

Any pipe leak is a situation where you need repairs done right away. Letting a leak continue is more than a waste of water: it threatens the building materials in your house and can lead to mold damage that’s expensive to remediate. Pipes can leak because of corrosion, age, or damage.

Frozen pipes

This is a huge problem in our climate during the winters! If you don’t take special steps to winterize your plumbing, the water inside the pipes may freeze up. The freezing causes an increase in pressure in the pipes that will cause them to burst. You can call us for emergency treatment of frozen pipes. (Trying to defrost them yourself may just speed up the bursting!)

Faulty water heaters

Most water heater failures are emergencies—you have to have running hot water to get through the day! Water heaters can also start to leak, which is an emergency situation as well.

Sewer line issues

This is an icky one that really makes people nervous. Sewer lines can be blocked or burst by tree root infiltration, corrosion, or the buildup of waste. There’s no way for you to access your own sewer line, so you have to call on plumbers right away before you have sewage getting backed up into your home.

Broken fixtures

This covers a whole range of common plumbing troubles, such as busted faucets and overflowing toilets that can threaten your home with water damage. Make sure you know where the water shut-off valve is located for your house so you can stop the flooding. Then call for emergency plumbing service right away.

Water main breaks

This is another nightmare situation for homeowners because it means a house completely cut off from freshwater. Water mains can age and corrode until they break. If you find your home has no water, first check with the utility company to make sure it isn’t an issue at their end. If it isn’t, it’s time to get plumbers on the job.
