Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Your Business

With fall here in Glenview, IL, winter can’t be too far behind. And one of the most pressing winter problems for your commercial plumbing system is frozen pipes. Water expands when it freezes, which means big trouble when it’s in your plumbing at the time. Burst pipes can wreak havoc one your business, causing substantial property damage and forcing your employees and customers away while you get the problem dealt with. The best defense is a good offense when it comes to frozen pipes, and while you can call in a plumber to fix the problem when it occurs, you’re usually best off preventing the problem in the first place. Here are a few tips and tricks to prevent frozen pipes with your business.

Keep the Heat On

Many businesses will turn off the heat over the weekends or during the Christmas holidays to save money. This can be a huge mistake when it comes to frozen pipes. While you can lower the heat a bit when the offices are closed, always make sure you have enough heat to keep the water in the pipes in a liquid state, or you may end up with a big mess on your hands when you return. Alternately, you can simply shut off the main water valve to the business if you can, and drain the pipes by turning on all the fixtures in the building. This may not be practical for a number of businesses, however.

Insulate the Pipes

A qualified plumbing service can wrap the pipes in insulation, guarding them against low temperatures and ensuring that you never have to worry about burst pipes. Now is the ideal time to schedule an installation session, when temperatures are still mild. That way, your business will be ready to go when the first snow starts to fall.
