These Are the Plumbing Emergencies You Want to Avoid

woman under sink looking at the pipe in panicIn addition to causing considerable damage to your home, plumbing issues can potentially impact your water bills. Even the smallest leak can account for significant water loss—gallons, over the course of a year. Fortunately, if you do run into any sort of plumbing problem, you can rely on our Glenview, IL professional plumbers to resolve it for you.

But, understandably, we’re sure you’d like to try to avoid having plumbing problems all together, particularly those that constitute an emergency service call. We have a few examples of common plumbing emergency calls below, and how you can help prevent them.

Clogged Sink Due to Grease Buildup

FOG is one of the largest threats to your kitchen sink plumbing. FOG stands for fats, oils, and grease, and it hardens as it cools, meaning it congeals and sticks to the inside of your pipes. The best thing you can do to prevent this is let the FOG cool in a tin can or some other disposable container, and then throw it away once it has hardened.

Foreign Object Blocking the Toilet from Flushing

Have you ever had a full trashcan, and been tempted to put something down the toilet instead, that doesn’t necessarily belong? Resist that temptation! Even sanitary or cleansing wipes that are marketed as “flushable” have a hard time breaking down, and therefore can clog up your toilet.

Broken Exposed Pipes in Basement

If you have exposed pipes in your basement or anywhere else overhead, then you’ve probably been tempted to hang clothes if you’re doing laundry, or hang other items on them. Unfortunatly, this can lead to broken and damaged plumbing.

These are just a few of the common emergency calls our team receives. Other common problems are garbage disposal breakdowns due to cramming food down the sink drain that doesn’t belong (fibrous veggies like celery, excessive potato skins) and using the wrong types of hookups for your washer and ending up with an overflowed washing machine.
