As much as we hope they would, problems like severe leaks, clogs, and other plumbing problems don’t always choose to show up during regular business hours. Since your plumbing system is vital to your home’s functionality it makes sense that when you do have a plumbing emergency, you want it to be taken care of right away.

But how do you know what constitutes as an emergency? When is it “worth it” to give us a call? Sure, obviously if there is water gushing out of a pipe and into your home and you don’t know where your main water shut off is, it’s clearly an emergency. But some signs are more subtle. We can tell you that if you detect a sewer line leak, a slab leak (a leak in a pipe underground) or a sudden decline in water pressure, it’s an emergency! So, what should you do next?

First, Shut the Water Off

Every household has a main water line shut-off valve that cuts off the water supply to the whole home. You should ensure that each household member knows where this is located and how to use it. The moment there is any kind of problem with your plumbing system, shut off the water and you’ll keep the issue from growing worse.

In many cases, individual plumbing outlets have their own shut-off valves, which cut off water to them while keeping the water flowing in other parts of your home. Your sink faucets and toilets, for instance, probably have their own. If you are sure that the problem is localized to one of these appliances, then you can shut the water off there instead of at the main water line.

Decide How Long You Can Wait

In most cases, whether or not a plumbing problem is an emergency depends on the extent of the damage it’s caused or is causing, and if you can wait for regular business hours. If the damage is localized to a toilet, for example, and you have another toilet in the home, you may choose to wait and that’s completely okay!

If, however, you have to shut off your main water line to stop further damage and it’s a Friday night, it warrants an emergency call.

Consider Your Peace of Mind

In many cases, a plumbing emergency doesn’t have to be defined by the damage that it’s causing, but just by how you feel about the issue. We understand that plumbing issues of any kind can feel urgent, and we are here for you.
